The Bundeskartellamt is an independent competition authority within the remit of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. It is based in Bonn. We employ around 450 staff, around half of whom are trained in law or economics. Our task is to safeguard competition.
For some years now, we have been paying particular attention to the fundamental changes in economic activity associated with digitalisation. In addition to a large number of antitrust proceedings in the area of the digital economy - including abuse proceedings against leading internet companies - we use our powers in the area of consumer protection to scrutinise digital business models. In all of these areas, we work together with the EU Commission, the state antitrust authorities and foreign antitrust authorities.
