ATHENE accompanies and supports the digital transformation of society, business and the public sector to improve cyber security and data protection. With its non-university and university research, ATHENE combines the strengths of both pillars in the German science system in a unique and innovative cooperation model. ATHENE covers all relevant aspects of cyber security and contributes to new methods, tools and solutions through research and further development. With extensive expertise in many areas of cyber security, ATHENE can help government and industry organisations to be prepared for cyber security threats.

ATHENE is a research centre of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with its two Fraunhofer Institutes SIT and IGD and with the participation of the universities TU Darmstadt, Goethe University Frankfurt and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. The centre is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts (HMWK) and is based in Darmstadt, the city of science.
