AI Area

Diversity makes tech stronger.

An entire area at the ITCS Frankfurt centred around the topic of artificial intelligence.
Compact, in-depth and full of practical insights.

Whether machine learning, AI ethics or GenAI in everyday life, our speakers provided clear impetus and plenty to talk about. Between bits, bots and future trends, people not only listened but also engaged in lively discussions.

An exciting insight behind the scenes of modern air traffic control and the current challenges.

The IT of German air traffic control is undergoing a transformation: from largely closed monolithic systems to a service-orientated and cloud-based architecture. The presentation illustrates this change using the example of the renewal of the air traffic control systems at our tower sites.

The aim of DFS is to use new technologies and architectures to maintain safety in the skies, increase capacity and bring innovations to air traffic controllers faster!

In many companies, infrastructure has grown historically - and is often complex: if you need a simple Linux VM, you first have to apply for IP addresses, configure networks and coordinate various teams. Development teams juggle with building blocks instead of innovation.

Atruvia is breaking down this silo mentality and building real infrastructure products: New platform teams for public and private cloud create the basis for a consistent, automated and secure developer experience. The aim is to allow our internal customers to focus on what really matters - developing software that makes an impact.

Dr Bernhard Thurm and Martin Steinmeier will provide insights into the development of platform engineering at Atruvia, show the first implementation steps and explain how a new form of collaboration between infrastructure and development is emerging from this.

As one of the largest retail groups in the world (Lidl & Kaufland), the Schwarz Group uses artificial intelligence as a decisive lever to make its supply chain not only more efficient, but also more sustainable. In this presentation, Alexander Ernst will use practical examples to show how Schwarz IT uses forecasting, pricing and optimisation to optimise the availability of goods and significantly reduce food waste at the same time. The direct impact of their algorithms leads to results that every customer can touch every day in their shops: fresher products and a smaller ecological footprint.

Can you only be successful in IT with technical knowledge? Wrong thinking!
Jeanine started out on her own and found her way into IT - without a traditional tech background, but with curiosity and courage. Sometimes the greatest strength lies outside the comfort zone: people with a non-tech background bring fresh perspectives, creativity and new ideas to IT.
This presentation shows how diversity drives innovation and why lateral entrants are the real game changers. Be inspired to discover your own superpower and rethink tech!

Philipp Kemmeter looks back on over 15 years of experience in IT - with positions in software development, infrastructure management and strategic IT management. In his career, he has been responsible for numerous transformation projects, but no change is as profound as the current AI revolution. At C24 Bank, this change is currently being implemented in concrete terms - through the targeted use of AI to reorganise processes, roles and technologies. Artificial intelligence is not only changing existing processes, but is also challenging entire paradigms of the IT landscape - and thus paving the way for a new era of intelligent, adaptive systems.

This presentation fundamentally questions the conventional wisdom of project management (agile and waterfall). Ines Kaps reveals why the most established best practices often become the biggest obstacle to the success of strategically important initiatives.
The core thesis: In a world of increasing complexity and uncertainty, the most successful project managers are not characterised by blind adherence to methodology, but by the courage to consciously and strategically break with convention.
Using an exciting case study, Ines Kaps shows how innovative managers can achieve sustainable success by selectively "breaking the rules". She identifies the critical moments in which the courage to break the rules in a controlled manner makes the difference between success and failure.

From language assistants that do not understand accents to application algorithms that discriminate - such system errors are no coincidence. They arise when homogeneous teams build products for a diverse world. This talk shows how cultural intelligence breaks through this "single story". Using concrete examples from IT projects, we will look at how diverse perspectives not only reduce bias, but also produce new, fairer solutions. The talk will conclude with empowering strategies for women in tech - from the power of specific networks such as SWANS for women with a migration history to the strategic use of one's own voice for all.

"Insights on bowing out of growth, taking leave of making sense, of activism, of creating confidence, embracing the post-purpose era, the erratic, silence, hush, stillness, contemplation, deepening ..then I thought, well, pour something over it to cover the traces of your mind and of your thought. so I poured sour milk over these objects. this is the way I found out that sour milk could give me satisfaction.

AI brings many opportunities for innovation to many industries but banks in particular. However, it also comes with new risks which we need to tackle. Hence building models is crucial but also a well-functioning model validation is key to long-term success and trustworthy AI implementation. This keynote is dedicated to the ambivalences of AI use in the context of cyber security: Prof Kipker examines how the increasing use of AI both opens up opportunities for a resilient digital infrastructure and creates new forms of dependency, control and vulnerability. Based on current technological and political developments, the keyword "digital sovereignty" raises questions about the role of state actors and the power relations of global technology companies. At the same time, the social dimension comes into focus: What effects does the use of intelligent systems have on perception, judgement and information culture? And what is the relationship between efficiency, security and autonomy in an increasingly data-driven world?

Despite massive investments and excitement around AI, the reality is stark: most AI projects fail to deliver meaningful business value. Our recent survey of 64 experienced AI practitioners from the DACH region confirms this challenge, revealing that 67% of AI projects fail, with generative AI projects showing even higher failure rates according to MIT research reaching 95%. This talk examines what drives these failures and what characterises the successful minority. Based on detailed practitioner responses, we'll explore why organisational challenges consistently outweigh technical ones in determining project outcomes, and examine how generative AI's rapid prototyping capabilities create unique management challenges.

In modern IT infrastructures, known security vulnerabilities and misconfigurations are often deliberately tolerated - whether for resource reasons or due to a misjudgement of the risk potential. This presentation analyses recurring vulnerabilities from production environments, including insecure default configurations, outdated software versions, lack of patch management processes and inadequate access controls.

Arctic Wolf Networks uses real attack vectors to show how threat actors systematically exploit these vulnerabilities - for example through privilege escalation, lateral movement or persistence mechanisms. It becomes clear that deliberately "accepting the risk" can not only result in compliance violations, but also in considerable financial and operational damage.

I was at the fair last Friday and I really enjoyed it. I had the opportunity to make lots of new contacts and find out more about very different jobs and career paths. As a student in my first semester of business informatics, I took away an incredible amount of positive and helpful information, especially a clearer overview of career prospects or current trends in the industry and valuable tips for my studies:) It was particularly motivating to talk directly to companies and gain practical insights. All in all, a very inspiring day! Thank you 🙂
